In the early 1980s, the Harley Davidson brand ruled the roost when it came to cruiser motorcycles. With plenty of options and capable engines, each one was tough to beat. However, the Honda brand made a strong push into the cruiser market when it began the Honda Shadow model lineup in 1983.
Still remaining a strong option for motorcycle enthusiasts, the Honda Shadow model lineup has provided a reliable, big bike experience for a good price. Plus, the model can be found in the Dallas and Lubbock areas by stopping into Twisted Cycles. Continue reading for an historical overview:
The Honda Shadow lineup has been born and bred in fierce competition. Once Honda began producing cruisers, a tariff was introduced on foreign vehicles with over 750cc in 1984. Honda responded by minimizing their Honda Shadow models, such as the VT750 model to 700cc through minimizing the displacement in its original engine. These were nicknamed “tariff busters” due to their new legality. Now able to compete with Harley-Davidson on level playing ground, they began extending their model lineup with new features – some of which include the VT600, VT1100, and the Shadow A.C.E.
Perhaps the most influential Honda Shadow model came in the VT1100C2, otherwise known as the A.C.E (American Classic Edition) in 1995. This model provided a launchpad for Shadow models in future years, which included the Aero, Sabre, Deluxe (VT750CD) and Spirit (VT750DC) models. These options provided various differences in style and engine modifications. However, cruiser renditions provided more retro and simplistic styling that mirrors the ACE model until slowly taking their own forms. It offered a Harley-Davidson-like sound from a single pin crank engine with induced vibrations at a more affordable cost.
Today, the Honda Shadow model lineup has been minimized in recent years but remains a strong option for those looking for a reliable bike. The last additions to the model have been in the RS and Phantom models, which can be found at Twisted Cycles alongside other renditions mentioned above.
